PSV Clinch Commanding 4-0 Victory Over Girona
Venue: Philips Stadion
Date: 5th November 2024
Match Summary
PSV Eindhoven delivered a commanding performance against Girona, clinching a 4-0 victory at home to record their biggest UEFA champions leauge win. PSV’s dominance was evident from start to finish as they controlled possession, created a multitude of chances, and converted them efficiently to seal the win. Girona struggled to find their footing and couldn’t recover from a series of blows, with a red card for Arnau Martinez only compounding their difficulties. The win highlighted PSV’s strength in both attack and midfield. It was a performance where they established themselves as a team with technical skills and the tenacity to dominate physically. On the other hand, Girona showed a glimpse of their quality, although having gone a man down. In our opinion, Girona would need to reassess and recover quickly after this disappointing showing, particularly their inability to manage PSV’s intensity or create sufficient chances to threaten the hosts.
First Half
The first half saw PSV come out firing, dominating possession (62%) and racking up several early chances. Their pressure paid off in the 16th minute when Ryan Flamingo scrambled the ball into the net after a long throw. PSV continued to push forward, with Malik Tillman doubling the lead in the 33rd minute, delivering a composed finish into the bottom corner. Girona’s best chance came through Miguel Gutierrez, but PSV’s Walter Benitez was on hand to make a vital save.
The home side’s relentless pursuit of goals was matched by their physicality, with both teams racking up yellow cards. A controversial VAR decision overturned a potential Girona penalty just before halftime, further dampening the visitors’ spirits. The score at halftime reflected PSV’s clear advantage, holding Girona to a modest 38% possession and a 2-0 deficit.
Second Half
In the second half, PSV resumed their attack with greater intensity, and the floodgates opened further in the 76th minute. Ismael Saibari thought he added a third with a brilliant solo effort, weaving past defenders and firing past Gazzaniga, who had been Girona’s last line of defence. Soon after, the goal was disallowed for a foul committed before he scored. However seven muinets later a brilliant cut in from the right and a low drive from Bakayoko insured the third goal for PSV. To compound a night of misfortune an unfortunate own goal by Ladislav Krejci made it 4-0, sealing Girona’s fate.
Despite being down a man after Arnau Martinez’s red card, Girona fought to regain composure. However, they struggled to produce meaningful attacks, managing just seven goal attempts compared to PSV’s 25. Late efforts from Johan Bakayoko and Ricardo Pepi tested Gazzaniga, who ended the match with eight saves, but PSV’s victory was never in doubt.
